Ha Seotsanyana’s story began with the entrepreneurial spirit of its founders, whose ancestors migrated from India to Basutoland, now Lesotho, in 1885. They arrived through Durban Port in South Africa and transported goods such as spices and blankets through the Sani Pass using donkey backs. Their determination and hard work led to permanent settlement in Lesotho, where they built families with the Basotho people. This cultural union created a rich heritage that still defines Ha Seotsanyana today.
Building a Family Legacy
The company’s foundation traces back to a family-run general dealer business started by the founder’s grandfather, known as Seotsanyana. His name became a symbol of hard work and business leadership. Over the years, the founder’s parents expanded operations in Mapoteng and Ha Lenono, running shops that served local communities day and night. Their dedication and resilience laid the foundation for a company built on service, commitment, and community trust.
Overcoming Challenges in the 1980s and 1990s
The family faced serious challenges in the 1980s after the founder’s father was injured in an accident. The founder took responsibility for running the business while still in school. In 1991, riots caused major losses across Lesotho, but the family rebuilt from scratch. These hardships shaped the company’s values of resilience, responsibility, and persistence that remain part of its identity.
A New Beginning in Gauteng
During a move to Gauteng, South Africa, the founder rebuilt the business from the ground up. He sold watermelons and winter coats while studying Theology. By 1997, the business was re-established, focusing on furniture and hardware. Customers from remote areas such as Thaba-Tseka continued to rely on Ha Seotsanyana, traveling long distances to purchase quality products.
Expanding Into the Fuel Industry
To create stable cash flow and sustainable growth, Ha Seotsanyana expanded into the fuel sector. Years of business experience guided this transition, helping the company become one of Lesotho’s trusted names in fuel supply and garage management. Today, Ha Seotsanyana operates several service stations across the country, providing petrol, diesel, and paraffin to communities and businesses.
